This
webpage is dedicated to all Veterans who wore their Dog-Tags while in Service
to Our Country, whether in War or in Peace. They are a great remembrance
of one's own Service or a remembrance of another's Service, such as our
still missing POW-MIA'S.
HISTORY OF DOG-TAGSMilitary Identification Tags, now commonly known as Dog-Tags, originated from the time of the Civil War. Casualties, carnage, and confusion were so great, that it became a practice for soldiers to pin a handkerchief or piece of paper with their names and addresses to their uniforms before an anticipated battle. From those beginnings, the metal Dog-Tags were developed in various configurations (including circular) prior to WWII. Names alone were used on early metallic Dog-Tags. There were times when fingerprints were burned into the metallic materials with acid for one's identification. The Dog-Tags pictured here are what have been officially utilized by United States Military Service Personnel for the past several decades. |
